Salvia clevelandii (A. Gray) Greene
Habit: Shrub < 1.5 m, gray-green; hairs +- throughout, simple, bent downward. Leaf: 2--4 cm; blade elliptic-ovate, puckered, base tapered to +- truncate; teeth small, rounded. Inflorescence: spike of 1--3 flower clusters; bracts firm, dark, < calyx. Flower: calyx 8--10 mm, distal 1/3 to all purple, upper lip entire to minutely 3-lobed; corolla tube 12--18 mm, dark blue-violet, upper lip 2-lobed, 6--8 mm, lower lip 4--5 mm; stamens, style exserted. Fruit: 2--2.5 mm, brown to gray, generally mottled. Chromosomes: 2n=30.
Ecology: Chaparral, dry slopes, coastal scrub; Elevation: < 1350 m. Bioregional Distribution: s SCo, PR; Distribution Outside California: northern Baja California. Flowering Time: Apr--Jul
