Rumex crassus Rech. f.
Habit: Perennial herb, glabrous; taproot vertical. Stem: decumbent to ascending, 2--5(6) dm, generally with axillary shoots below 1° inflorescence. Leaf: blade 3--12 cm, 1--5 cm wide, lance-ovate to -elliptic or ovate-elliptic, thick, leathery, base tapered or truncate, margin entire, flat, tip acute. Inflorescence: axillary, terminal, generally dense, interrupted near base or not, branches generally simple; whorls 10--25-flowered; pedicels 4--9 mm, +- 2 × as long as inner perianth, thick, joints swollen. Flower: inner perianth lobes (3)4--5 mm, (2.5)3--4 mm wide, widely to narrow-ovate to -deltate, base rounded to +- truncate, margin entire to irregularly toothed, tip +- acute; tubercle 1, large, almost as wide as lobe, +- glabrous, warty. Fruit: 2--2.5 mm, 1.7--2.1 mm wide, brown to dark red-brown. Chromosomes: 2n=20.
Ecology: Coastal dunes, sandy shores, marshes; Elevation: < 100 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCo, CCo; Distribution Outside California: Oregon. Flowering Time: Feb--Jul
