Osmadenia tenella Nutt.
Habit: Annual 0.5--4 dm, +- densely glandular, especially inflorescence, +- scabrous and long-hairy, strongly scented; tack-like glands 0. Stem: erect; branchlets many, thread-like, +- spreading. Leaf: mostly cauline, alternate, sessile; proximal (1)2--5 cm, linear, entire, scabrous, glandular, proximally +- ciliate or shaggy-hairy; distal reduced. Inflorescence: heads many, radiate, in loose cyme-like clusters; peduncle spreading, bracts few, 5--12(20) mm, narrowly lance-linear; phyllaries 3--6 mm, partly enfolding ray fruit, tips acute to attenuate; receptacle flat, glabrous; paleae between ray and disk flowers, 3.5--7 mm, fused. Ray Flower: 3--5; tube slender, > 1/2 ray; ray deeply 3-lobed, lobes +- = ray, 3--8 mm, white, aging +- red, occasionally red-splotched on adaxial face. Disk Flower: 3--10; corolla generally colored like rays; anthers yellow, tips lanceolate; style tips linear. Fruit: ray fruit 1.8--2.7 mm, back rounded to angled, rough, glabrous, adaxial face +- flat, beak short, adaxially off-center, pappus 0; disk fruit +- angled, tapered at base, +- thinly hairy, pappus of +- 8 scales, long and short. Chromosomes: 2n=18.
Ecology: Locally common. Barren, often rocky, sandy soils, coastal-sage scrub, grassland, oak savanna; Elevation: 30--1200 m. Bioregional Distribution: SW (exc ChI); Distribution Outside California: Baja California. Flowering Time: May--Jul Note: Self-sterile.
