Ranunculus sardous Crantz
Habit: Annual, biennial 18--50 cm, +- erect, not bulbous-based; roots basal, not tuberous. Leaf: basal, proximal cauline leaves 2--6 cm, 2--6 cm wide, ovate to cordate, 1--2-ternate, leaflets crenate-dentate, base truncate to acute, tip rounded to obtuse. Flower: receptacle long-hairy; sepals 5, reflexed, 3--8 mm, 1.5--3 mm wide, early-deciduous; petals 5, 7--10 mm, 4--8 mm wide. Fruit: body 2--3 mm, 6--7 mm wide, disk-like, wall coarsely papillate (smooth), each papilla tipped with hooked bristle, beak 0.4--0.7 mm, curved, oblong to deltate.
Ecology: Ponds, wetlands; Elevation: < 300 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCo, CaRF, n&c SNF, ScV; Distribution Outside California: Oregon, eastern United States, Australia; native to Europe. Flowering Time: May--Jul
