Polygonum marinense T.R. Mert. & P.H. Raven
Habit: Annual, +- succulent. Stem: prostrate to ascending, 15--40 cm, glabrous, green to red-tinged, ribbed, branches from base. Leaf: distal >> distal flowers; ocreae 4--6 mm, proximally funnel-shaped, distally soon disintegrating +- completely; petiole 2--5 mm; blade 20--35 mm, 9--16 mm wide, elliptic to obovate or oblanceolate, generally red-tinged, margin flat, tip rounded; stem leaves (1.3)2--2.6(3.5) × branch leaves. Inflorescence: in most leaf axils; pedicels generally exserted, 2--4 mm; flowers 1--4. Flower: 1/2-open; perianth 3--3.5(4) mm, green, margin white or pink, tube 18--25% of length, lobes overlapped, not keeled, widely rounded, hood-shaped, midvein unbranched; stamens 8. Fruit: exserted, 2.8--3.4(4) mm, ovate, brown, shiny, rough, faces subequal or 1 +- narrower; late-season uncommon, 4.5--5 mm. Chromosomes: 2n=60.
Ecology: Coastal salt, brackish marshes, swamps; Elevation: < 10 m. Bioregional Distribution: n CCo (< 15 sites, Marin, Napa, Solano, Sonoma cos.). Flowering Time: Apr--Aug Note: Origin, phylogeny needing further study.
