Plantago arenaria Waldst. & Kit.
Habit: Annual; hairs +- coarse. Stem: 2--6 cm, branched. Leaf: cauline, opposite, appearing clustered at nodes, 2--4.5 cm, thread-like or linear, entire. Inflorescence: axillary; spikes generally in cyme-like clusters at peduncle tip, 1--2 cm, round to elliptic; peduncle 3--7 cm; proximal bracts exserted, tips long, slender, distal bracts enclosing flowers, generally = calyx, round-ovate, obtuse. Flower: corolla lobes spreading, +- 2 mm, narrowly ovate. Seed: 2, 2.5 mm.
Ecology: Sandy disturbed areas; Elevation: < 200 m. Bioregional Distribution: CCo, SnFrB, SCo; Distribution Outside California: native to Eurasia. Flowering Time: Jul--Nov Note: Often used for bird seed, poultry feed.
Synonyms: Plantago indica L., superfl.; Plantago psyllium L., ambig.
