Plantago aristata Michx.
Habit: Annual; drying dark green, hairs 0 to +- present. Leaf: 5--15 cm, linear, entire. Inflorescence: generally 1--6, 9--35 cm including peduncle; spike 1--13 cm; peduncle not grooved, hairs nearly always ascending, each in diam +- 2 × those on leaves; bract exserted, generally 3--12 × calyx, linear, ascending, green bract midrib generally reaching tip. Flower: abaxial sepals united at base, scarious parts free; corolla lobes 1.5--2.3 mm, round-ovate, generally obtuse, 3 generally spreading, 1 erect. Seed: 2, 2--2.5 mm, inner side deeply concave. Chromosomes: 2n=20.
Ecology: Disturbed areas; Elevation: < 200 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCo, GV, SCo, expected elsewhere; Distribution Outside California: native to eastern United States. Flowering Time: Jun--Jul
