Plagiobothrys tenellus (Nutt. ex Hook.) A. Gray.
Habit: Annual, rarely entire plant red, hairs +- spreading; roots occasionally +- red. Stem: 1--many, erect, 0.5--3 dm. Leaf: basal in rosette, 1--5 cm; cauline few, alternate. Inflorescence: +- strongly coiled toward tip, elongating in fruit, bracts near base; flowers generally > 10 per branch. Flower: calyx 3--4(5) mm; corolla limb 1.5--3 mm diam, appendages +- pale yellow. Fruit: nutlet 1--2 mm, cross-shaped, strongly arched, shiny; abaxial ridge, lateral ridges smooth to tubercled, cross-ribs wide, generally papillate, interspaces narrow, groove-like, often obscure; scar near middle, +- round.
Ecology: Common. Dry, open slopes in grassland, scrub, woodland, forest; Elevation: < 1700 m. Bioregional Distribution: CA-FP, MP, w D; Distribution Outside California: to British Columbia, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Mexico. Flowering Time: Mar--Jun
Unabridged Note: Variable. See note under Plagobothrys shastensis. If recognized taxonomically, +- red plants similar to Plagiobothrys tenellus from Siskiyou Co. assignable to Plagiobothrys colorans Greene based on fruit.
