Plagiobothrys infectivus I.M. Johnst.
Habit: Annual, +- red, staining. Stem: erect, 1--5 dm, +- canescent, +- spreading-hairy. Leaf: basal few, 2--8 cm, linear, in +- short-lived rosette; cauline alternate, many, oblong; abaxial leaf midveins, margins red. Inflorescence: bracts throughout, occasionally sparse; pedicels 1--2 mm. Flower: calyx 5--7 mm, lobes sparse-hairy, midveins dark red; corolla limb 3--4 mm diam, occasionally stained pink, appendages yellow. Fruit: nutlets 2--4, 2--3 mm, triangular-ovate, +- narrowed below tip, +- arched, pale gray-green, irregularly coarse-granular; abaxial ridge narrowly +- white-winged, cross-ribs 0--few, irregular; scar near middle, narrow-elliptic, deep-concave, crown 0.
Ecology: Open grassland, friable clay to sandy soils; Elevation: 80--830 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCoRI, w SnJV, e SnFrB, SCoR. Flowering Time: Mar--May
Unabridged Note: Seldom collected, especially in fruit. Variation in nutlet surface features indicates possible hybridization; study needed.
