Plagiobothrys diffusus (Greene) I.M. Johnst.
Habit: Annual, strigose. Stem: prostrate to +- ascending, 0.5--2.5 dm. Leaf: cauline, lower 5--10 cm. Inflorescence: bracts throughout, spreading. Flower: calyx 2.5--5 mm, lobes +- appressed-hairy; corolla limb (2)3--5 mm diam, appendages yellow. Fruit: nutlet 1--1.5 mm, ovate, +- flat, tan to gray, +- dull; abaxial ridge obscure, rounded, lateral ridges 0 to obscure, cross-ribs low, +- net-like or +- tubercled; interspaces wide, +- smooth to +- tubercled; lower part of adaxial ridge in trough; scar near base, elliptic to ovate, deep-concave, sunken.
Ecology: Moist places, seeps; Elevation: 30--150 m. Bioregional Distribution: c CCo, w-c SnFrB. Flowering Time: Apr--Jun
Unabridged Note: Strongly like Plagiobothrys trachycarpus in most features except nutlets, which resemble those of Plagiobothrys reticulatus. Additional populations need to be collected. Differences in nutlet surface characters in Santa Cruz Co. warrants study.
