Pinus sabiniana D. Don
Stem: trunk < 38 m, < 2 m wide, often leaning, with several major branches after 20--30 years; bark dark gray, furrows irregular, forming yellow plates in age. Leaf: 3 per bundle, 9--38 cm, gray-green, generally drooping; sheath persistent. Seed Cone: pendent, 10--28 cm, ovate-oblong, +- brown, opening slowly 2nd year; stalk < 7 cm, persistent with proximal cone scales several years; scale tip recurved, elongated 3--7 cm, angled. Seed: > wing.
Ecology: Foothill woodland, northern oak woodland, chaparral, infertile soils in mixed-conifer and hardwood forests; Elevation: 150--1500 m. Bioregional Distribution: CA-FP (exc n NW, n CaR, SnJV), w GB, w D; Distribution Outside California: southern Oregon.
