Pinus edulis Engelm.
Stem: trunk < 15 m, < 1.1 m wide; bark shallow-furrowed, red-brown; mature crown +- rounded. Leaf: generally 2 per bundle, 2--6 cm, dark green; sheath deciduous. Seed Cone: spreading, 3--5 cm, ovoid, yellow-brown; stalk +- 0; scale tip knobs < 1 cm, angled, truncate. Seed: wing persistent on scale.
Ecology: Pinyon/juniper woodland; Elevation: 1300--2700 m. Bioregional Distribution: DMtns (New York Mtns); Distribution Outside California: to southern Wyoming, western Texas, northern Mexico. Note: Extent of hybridization with Pinus monophylla under study.
