Pinus coulteri D. Don
Stem: trunk < 42 m, < 1.5 m wide; young bark dark brown to +- black, with irregular furrows, mature with +- yellow plates; mature crown branches thick, lower reaching ground or not. Leaf: 3 per bundle, 15--30 cm, stiff; sheath persistent. Seed Cone: pendent, 19--35 cm, +- ovoid-oblong, +- yellow, opening slowly in 2nd or 3rd year, deciduous over many years; stalk < 10 cm, persistent with proximal scales; scale tips reflexed, elongated 3--5 cm, angled. Seed: < wing.
Ecology: Chaparral, lower mixed-conifer, mixed-hardwood forests; Elevation: < 3000 m. Bioregional Distribution: CW, SW; Distribution Outside California: northern Baja California.
