Penstemon scapoides D.D. Keck
Habit: Subshrub 15--60 cm, +- scapose, woody-branched proximally. Stem: glabrous, glaucous. Leaf: generally dense, in basal mat, entire, densely hairy; basal leaves 1.5--6 mm, ovate to +- round; cauline leaves few, narrowly linear to narrowly oblanceolate. Inflorescence: glandular. Flower: calyx 3--5 mm, lobes oblong to widely ovate; corolla 25--34 mm, pale lavender to purple or blue, glandular outside, floor yellow-hairy; anther sacs 1.4--1.7 mm, dehiscing at proximal end +- 1/2 length, inner margins glabrous; staminode pale yellow-hairy. Chromosomes: 2n=16.
Ecology: Sagebrush scrub, pinyon/juniper, and bristlecone-pine woodland; Elevation: 2000--3200 m. Bioregional Distribution: W&I, n DMtns (Last Chance Range). Flowering Time: Jun--Jul
