Penstemon californicus (Munz & I.M. Johnst.) D.D. Keck
Habit: Perennial herb 10--30 cm, spreading to ascending; hairs appressed, flat, scale-like, backward-pointing. Leaf: petioled; 7--15 mm, linear to narrowly oblanceolate, entire. Flower: calyx 4--8.5 mm, lobes ovate, hairy as on leaves (or also sparsely glandular); corolla 14--18 mm, (blue-)purple, white inside, dark-lined, sparsely glandular outside, floor sparsely hairy; anther sacs 1--1.3 mm, dehiscing full length; staminode hairy. Chromosomes: 2n=16.
Ecology: Sandy soils, yellow-pine forest or pinyon/juniper woodland; Elevation: 1200--2300 m. Bioregional Distribution: PR; Distribution Outside California: Mexico. Flowering Time: May--Jun
