Holozonia filipes (Hook. & Arn.) Greene
Habit: Perennial herb 3--15 dm, from rhizome. Stem: aerial stem +- erect, branches +- stiffly ascending, +- long-soft hairy. Leaf: mostly cauline, proximal-most opposite, bases fused around stem, distal alternate, sessile, 3--10 cm, 2--8 mm wide, linear to lanceolate, entire, +- soft-hairy, distal stiff-glandular-hairy, glands cup-shaped. Inflorescence: heads radiate, 1 or in loose, +- flat-topped to panicle-like clusters; peduncle thread-like; involucre +- obconic or top-shaped, 2--4+ mm diam; phyllaries 4--10 in 1 series, each mostly or wholly enveloping a ray ovary, 3--5 mm, +- lance-linear, coarse-hairy, with stalked cup-shaped glands or not; receptacle flat to convex, glabrous or minutely bristly; paleae in 1 series between ray and disk flowers, fused, deciduous. Ray Flower: 4--10; corolla +- white, ray fan-shaped, deeply lobed, abaxially +- purple-veined. Disk Flower: 9--28, staminate; corolla 3--4.5 mm, white, hairy, tube < throat, lobes deltate; anthers +- dark purple, tips ovate to triangular; style glabrous proximal to branches, tips long, awl-shaped, short-hairy. Fruit: 2.5--3.5 mm, compressed front-to-back, +- club-shaped, glabrous, black, tip beakless, broadly cup-shaped; ray pappus 0 or crown-like, 0.1--0.3 mm; disk pappus 0 or of 1--5 awl-shaped, deciduous scales. Chromosomes: 2n=28.
Ecology: Banks, dry streambeds, pools, rocky or alkaline clay, sometimes serpentine; Elevation: 30--1000 m. Bioregional Distribution: s KR, NCoRO, CaRF, n&c SNF, e edge GV, SnFrB, c SCoRO, sw MP. Flowering Time: Jun--Oct Note: Self-sterile.
