Opuntia leucotricha DC.
Habit: Generally trees, +- shrubby when young. Stem: < 5 m, branches ascending to spreading; segments 15--30 cm, obovate to elliptic or +- round, gray-green to yellow-green, velvety-pubescent. Spines: (1)3--20 per areole, < 3 cm, slender, +- white, numerous in age on older segments and trunk, hair-like, < 8 cm. Flower: inner perianth yellow; filaments white; style pink or red, stigma green. Fruit: 4--6 cm, fleshy, yellow to +- purple, pubescent; areoles +- 35--72, spines 0 or few in some areoles. Seed: 3--4 mm. Chromosomes: 2n=44.
Ecology: Coastal-sage scrub; Elevation: 150 m. Bioregional Distribution: SCo (San Diego Co.); Distribution Outside California: Florida, central Mexico. Flowering Time: Apr--May
