Oenothera longissima Rydb.
Habit: Biennial, rosetted, minutely strigose; hairs also generally long, spreading, with red, bristle-like base, sometimes some glandular. Stem: erect, 6--30 dm. Leaf: cauline 5--22 cm, narrowly oblanceolate to +- elliptic, +- entire to dentate. Inflorescence: spike. Flower: hypanthium 60--135 mm; sepals 23--47 mm, free tips in bud 2--6 mm; petals 28--65 mm, yellow fading red-orange. Fruit: 25--55 mm, 4--9 mm wide, +- cylindric, +- straight. Seed: 1--2 mm, angled, irregularly pitted. Chromosomes: 2n=14.
Ecology: Seasonally moist places in creosote-bush scrub, pinyon/juniper woodland; Elevation: 1000--1700 m. Bioregional Distribution: e DMtns (New York Mtns); Distribution Outside California: to Colorado, Arizona. Flowering Time: Jul--Sep Note: Generally cross-pollinated.
