Nemacladus capillaris Greene
Habit: Erect, 7--18 cm, 1st branches generally 1.5 cm from base. Stem: stiffly ascending. Leaf: 3--15 mm, ovate, entire, glabrous or hairy, narrowed abruptly to short petiole. Inflorescence: axis zigzag, especially in fruit; bracts 1--3 mm, lanceolate to elliptic or ovate, spreading to erect, appressed to pedicel; pedicel 8--12 mm, 0.1--0.15 mm diam, spreading, straight or +- curved, tip not curved. Flower: not inverted; hypanthium +- 1 mm; sepals +- 0.5 mm, elliptic to lanceolate, erect; corolla conspicuously 2-lipped, divided +- to base, white, lobes oblanceolate, glabrous, 3 adaxial erect, with +- pink area at tip and sometimes other darker marks as well, +- 0.7 mm, 2 abaxial spreading, 1 mm; filaments declined, +- 1 mm, tip +- curved, glabrous, appendage cells 2, directly attached to base of filaments, 0.1 mm, blunt, anthers 0.1--0.2 mm; ovary 1/2-inferior. Fruit: 1.5--2.5 mm, base acute, tip rounded. Seed: 0.5--0.7 mm, widely elliptic, narrowly zigzag-ridged. Chromosomes: n=9.
Ecology: Dry slopes, burned areas, volcanic outcrops; Elevation: 400--2100 m. Bioregional Distribution: KR, NCoR, CaR, n SNF, SNH, SCoRO, WTR, MP; Distribution Outside California: Oregon. Flowering Time: May--Jul
