Habit: Dioecious. Stem: internodes generally prickled. Leaf: margin teeth 8--13 per side, tip acute, with 1 tooth; sheath tip acute. Staminate Flower: 1.7--3 mm; anther chambers 4. Pistillate Flower: 2.5--5.7 mm; stigma 3-lobed. Seed: 1.2--2.2 mm wide, ovate, coat pitted, dull. Chromosomes: 2n=12.
Ecology: Ponds, lakes, marshes, rivers; Elevation: < 1000 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCoR, s SNF, CCo, SCoR, SCo, SnBr, PR, D; Distribution Outside California: to north-central United States, Baja California; Eurasia, Pacific islands. Flowering Time: Jul--Aug
