Mentzelia pterosperma Eastw.
Habit: Biennial, perennial herb 6--42 cm. Stem: erect, hairy. Leaf: 1--8(13) cm, 6--22 mm wide, lower elliptic to oblanceolate, entire to short-toothed, upper elliptic to lanceolate, toothed (lobed near base). Inflorescence: bracts narrowly lanceolate, entire, green. Flower: sepals 6--10 mm; petals 9--12(24) mm, 2--5 mm wide, yellow, tip acute; stamens 4--15 mm; filaments of 5 outermost 5--15 mm, 1--3 mm wide, narrowly oblanceolate, without anther; style 6--11(17) mm. Fruit: erect, 8--14 mm, 5--10 mm wide, cup-shaped to cylindric. Seed: +- 2.5--4 mm, +- 3 mm wide, lenticular, winged, white. Chromosomes: 2n=22.
Ecology: +- white gypsum-rich soils; Elevation: 1000--1200 m. Bioregional Distribution: e-c DMoj; Distribution Outside California: to Colorado, northwestern Arizona. Flowering Time: Apr--Jun
