Mentzelia eremophila (Jeps.) H.J. Thomps. & J.E. Roberts
Habit: Annual 8--43 cm. Stem: erect, glabrous to hairy. Leaf: 1--15 cm, lower lobed, upper entire to lobed. Inflorescence: bracts lanceolate to ovate, entire to 2-toothed at base, green. Flower: sepals (7)9--16 mm; petals 12--24 mm, obovate, yellow; stamens 3--10 mm; style 7--15 mm. Fruit: generally curved < 270°, 19--40 mm, 2--3.5 mm wide, obconic. Seed: +- 1 mm, irregular-rounded above mid-fruit, ×-section occasionally triangular with grooves along longitudinal edges below mid-fruit, tan, +- dark mottled; recurved flap over attachment scar conspicuous; seed coat cells domed, < 1/2 tall as wide in age. Chromosomes: 2n=18.
Ecology: Canyons, rocky slopes and washes, roadsides, creosote-bush scrub; Elevation: 600--1250 m. Bioregional Distribution: w DMoj. Flowering Time: Mar--May Note: Intergrades with Mentzelia nitens.
