Medicago praecox DC.
Habit: Annual, generally strigose. Stem: decumbent, 1--3 dm. Leaf: stipules lanceolate, generally cut +- 1/2 width; leaflets 3--10 mm, wedge-shaped or obovate to obcordate, length 1--2 × width. Inflorescence: generally axillary, 1--3-flowered. Flower: calyx 1.5--3 mm; corolla 2.5--4 mm, yellow, ephemeral. Fruit: a loose spiral, coiled 3--5 turns, spheric or disk-like; tan to dark, prickles slender, hooked, hairs sparse. Seed: few. Chromosomes: 2n=14.
Ecology: Uncommon. Creek beds, oak woodland, disturbed areas; Elevation: < 1500 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCoRI, CaRF, SN, SnFrB, SCo; Distribution Outside California: native to Mediterranean. Flowering Time: Apr--May
