AGRICULTURAL, GARDEN, OR URBAN WEED
Habit: Annual, +- glabrous. Stem: spreading, mat-forming. Leaf: stipules generally divided +- to base into a cluster of bristles; leaflets 1--1.5 cm, obovate. Inflorescence: 1--5-flowered. Flower: calyx 2.5--3 mm; corolla 3--6 mm, yellow with +- dark purple spot on back of banner, ephemeral. Fruit: coiled 3--7 loose turns, generally disk-like; papery, tan to black, prickles 0, hairs 0 or +- glandular. Seed: several. Chromosomes: 2n=16.
Ecology: Uncommon. Disturbed areas, roadsides; Elevation: especially < 500 m. Bioregional Distribution: ScV, CCo/SnFrB; Distribution Outside California: sporadic elsewhere in United States, Oklahoma, Florida; native to Mediterranean, northern Africa. Flowering Time: Mar--Jun
