Medicago arabica (L.) Huds.
Habit: Annual, hairs 0 to sparse. Stem: generally sprawling, 1--4 dm. Leaf: pinnate or subpalmate; stipules generally cut 1/4--1/2 width; leaflets generally 1--2.5 cm, generally obcordate, length +- = width, with dark central spot. Inflorescence: 2--4-flowered. Flower: calyx 2--2.5 mm; corolla 4--5 mm, yellow. Fruit: a loose spiral, coiled 4--6 turns, spheric or short-cylindric; tan to brown, prickles curved, hooked, hairs 0. Seed: several. Chromosomes: 2n=16.
Ecology: Disturbed and agricultural areas, fields, woodland; Elevation: < 2000 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCo, NCoR, CaRF, n SN, ScV, CW; Distribution Outside California: abundant especially in southeastern United States, elsewhere; native to Mediterranean. Flowering Time: Mar--Jun
