Malacothamnus jonesii (Munz) Kearney
Habit: Plant < 3 m, branches slender, in age occasionally black; close-dense-woolly, hairs sessile, white. Leaf: blade < 4 cm, < 4 cm wide, diamond-shaped, thick, unlobed to shallowly 3-lobed, hairs dense abaxially, adaxially; veins +- prominent abaxially. Inflorescence: panicle-like; flowers 3--5 per node; leaf-like bracts < 3; flowering stalks slender, < 0.7 cm; bractlets > 1/2 calyx, black in age. Flower: calyx < 1 cm, 1/2 as wide, lobes awl-shaped to lanceolate; petals < 2 cm, filament column to 1 cm. Fruit: segments 3 mm, +- 3 mm wide, deeply notched, dark brown. Chromosomes: 2n=34.
Ecology: Open chaparral in foothill woodland; Elevation: 250--830 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCoRI, SCoRO. Flowering Time: May--Jul
