Habit: Perennial herb 1--3 dm, matted. Stem: decumbent, rooting at nodes, +- branched, +- glabrous. Leaf: opposite, < 5 cm; blade narrowly elliptic to +- round, entire, +- glabrous to densely and minutely strigose. Inflorescence: pedicel 0--3 mm. Flower: sepals 4, 1.8--5 mm; petals 4, 1--3 mm, yellow; stamens 4, anthers 0.4--0.9 mm, pollen shed +- in 4s; ovary stripes 0. Fruit: erect, 4--10 mm, oblong to narrowly obconic, sometimes +- hairy. Seed: 0.6--0.8 mm, free from fruit wall. Chromosomes: 2n=32.
Ecology: Muddy or sandy streambanks, ponds; Elevation: < 900 m. Bioregional Distribution: SnBr, PR, sw DMoj; Distribution Outside California: to southeastern United States, Caribbean, northern Mexico, southern Asia, Japan. Flowering Time: Jul--Sep
