Juncus torreyi Coville
Habit: Perennial herb 30--100 cm; rhizome thin, creeping, with narrow tubers. Stem: stout. Leaf: sheath appendages prominent, thin; blade cylindric, crosswalls complete. Inflorescence: lowest bract > inflorescence; clusters 1--20, 25--80-flowered, crowded. Flower: perianth parts slender, tapered to rigid points, sepals 4--5.6 mm, petals 3.5--5 mm; stamens 6, filaments > anthers. Fruit: +- = perianth, thin, 3-angled, tapered to point, seeds below middle only. Seed: 0.4--0.5 mm, oblong; appendages 0. Chromosomes: 2n=40.
Ecology: Meadows, moist woodland; Elevation: < 1800 m. Bioregional Distribution: Teh, SnJV, CCo, SCo, WTR, SnGb, PR (exc SnJt), GB (exc Wrn), D; Distribution Outside California: to British Columbia, eastern Canada, Georgia. Fruiting Time: Jun--Sep
