Juncus rugulosus Engelm.
Habit: Perennial herb, generally densely matted, 15--70 cm; rhizome stout, horizontal; surfaces prominently wrinkled. Leaf: basal blades 0; sheath appendages 4--6 mm, prominent, scarious; cauline blades cylindric, crosswalls complete, obscure. Inflorescence: lowest bract generally inconspicuous; branches spreading; clusters generally many (< 150), 4--8-flowered; bracts, bractlets scarious. Flower: perianth parts brown to +- brown-red, scarious margins wide, sepals 2.5 mm, +- bristle-tipped, petals 2.5--3 mm, petal veins prominent at base; stamens 6, filaments +- = anthers. Fruit: > perianth, 3-angled, long-beaked, bright +- brown-red. Seed: 0.4 mm, plump, brown; appendages minute. Chromosomes: 2n=40.
Ecology: Common. Wet places; Elevation: < 2100 m. Bioregional Distribution: s SNF, CCo, s SCoRO, SCo, TR, PR, DMtns, DSon; Distribution Outside California: Baja California. Fruiting Time: Jun--Sep Note: Relationship to Juncus dubius needs study.
