Juncus planifolius R. Br.
Habit: Annual or perennial herb, 1--50 cm; rhizome 0, short, or elongate. Stem: slender. Leaf: basal; blade with flat side toward stem, exceeded by inflorescence, 1--6 mm wide, not stiff, crosswalls 0. Inflorescence: open or compact; lowest bract < inflorescence; clusters 1--30, 3--10-flowered. Flower: perianth parts 2.3--3.2 mm, acute, dark brown to +- black, petals blunter than sepals; stamens 3, filaments > yellow anthers. Fruit: < perianth, ellipsoid to ovoid; beak small. Seed: 0.3--0.4 mm, ovoid, brown, not or faintly striate; appendages minute.
Ecology: Locally common. Sunny damp ditches, freshwater shorelines; Elevation: < 150 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCo; Distribution Outside California: southern Oregon, native to Australia, New Zealand, Chile, introduced in Hawaii, Ireland. Fruiting Time: Sep--Nov
