Juncus orthophyllus Coville
Habit: Perennial herb 20--50 cm; rhizome scaly, hard, dark, creeping. Leaf: generally basal; sheath appendages 0 or minute; blade with flat side toward stem, << to +- = stem, 2--6 mm wide, crosswalls 0; cauline leaves 1--3. Inflorescence: open; lowest bract inconspicuous; branches papillate; clusters 3--12, 6--10-flowered, hemispheric; bractlets prominent, +- 1/2 perianth. Flower: perianth parts 5--6 mm, minutely papillate, bristle-tipped, midvein area green, margins brown, sepals < petals; stamens 6, filaments < anthers. Fruit: +- < perianth; tip flat; beak small. Seed: 0.4--0.6 mm, brown; appendages minute, 0--0.1 mm.
Ecology: Inland wet places, especially meadows, streambanks in forest; Elevation: 1200--3500 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCoRO, NCoRH, CaR, n SNF, SNH, TR, PR (Santa Ana Mtns), MP (exc Wrn), SNE (exc W&I), DMtns; Distribution Outside California: to Washington, Idaho, Nevada. Fruiting Time: Aug--Oct
