Juncus longistylis Torr.
Habit: Perennial herb 20--60 cm, rhizomatous. Stem: slender. Leaf: generally basal; sheath appendages obvious, generally rounded, > 1 mm; blade with flat side toward stem, < 1/2 stem, 1--3 mm wide, crosswalls 0; cauline leaves 1--3. Inflorescence: lowest bract 1--2 cm, membranous; flower clusters 1--4(5), 3--12-flowered. Flower: perianth parts 5--6 mm, sepals generally = petals, midvein broad, dark green, occasionally papillate, scarious margin wide; stamens 6, filaments < anthers. Fruit: < perianth, 3-angled, brown; beak short. Seed: 0.5 mm, narrow; appendages short. Chromosomes: 2n=40.
Ecology: Moist places in conifer forest; Elevation: 1800--2900 m. Bioregional Distribution: SNH, TR, PR, Wrn, W&I; Distribution Outside California: to British Columbia, Michigan, eastern Canada, New Mexico. Fruiting Time: Jul--Sep
