Juncus kelloggii Engelm.
Habit: Annual, cespitose, 0.1--6 cm; +- red in fruit. Stem: 0.1--0.3 mm wide, hair-like. Leaf: basal, < 2.5 cm, 0.1--0.4 mm wide. Inflorescence: flowers generally (1)2--3(4) per stem; bracts 1--2.5 mm, acute to acuminate. Flower: perianth parts generally 6, 1.5--3.2 mm, unequal; stamens 2--3, filaments > anthers, anthers < 0.7 mm. Fruit: +- = perianth, color similar, obovoid to elliptic. Seed: 0.4--0.6 mm, ovoid, obviously striate; appendages minute. Chromosomes: 2n=34.
Ecology: Uncommon. Damp sandy or clay soils, vernal pools, seeps, fields, meadows; Elevation: < 800 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCoR, CaRF, n SNF, ScV, CW; Distribution Outside California: to British Columbia, Idaho. Fruiting Time: Apr--Jun Note: Generally self-pollinating. Type (CCo) possibly a distinct, extinct subsp.
