Juncus dubius Engelm.
Habit: Perennial herb, generally densely matted, 15--70 cm; rhizome stout. Leaf: basal blades 0; cauline leaves few, sheath appendages 4--6 mm, prominent, scarious, blade cylindric, crosswalls complete. Inflorescence: lowest bract generally 1--2 cm, inconspicuous; branches spreading; clusters generally many, 4--10-flowered; bracts, bractlets scarious. Flower: perianth parts 2.5--3 mm, +- equal, bristle-tipped; stamens 6, filaments << anthers. Fruit: barely > perianth, 3-sided. Seed: obovate; appendages minute.
Ecology: Wet places; Elevation: < 2000 m. Bioregional Distribution: KR, NCoRO, CaRF, n&c SNH, ScV, SnFrB, SCoRO, SnGb, PR, DMoj; Distribution Outside California: northern Mexico. Fruiting Time: Jul--Sep Note: Relationship to Juncus rugulosus needs study.
