Juncus chlorocephalus Engelm.
Habit: Perennial herb 12--50 cm; rhizome +- stout, mat-forming. Leaf: generally basal, purple-red, blade 0; cauline leaves 3--4, sheath appendages 4--6 mm, scarious, blade +- 1/3 stem, < 1 mm wide, cylindric, crosswalls complete. Inflorescence: lowest bract inconspicuous, generally reaching lowest cluster; clusters 1--3, +- as wide as long; bractlets scarious, +- 1/3 perianth. Flower: perianth parts +- 4 mm, +- equal, white to pink or +- green, midvein pale green to red, margins wide, scarious, sepals pointed, petals rounded; stamens 6, filaments < 1/2 anthers; style > perianth, stigmas prominent, 2.7 mm. Fruit: << perianth, 3-angled, brown. Seed: 0.6 mm, asymmetric, light brown.
Ecology: Wet areas in montane conifer forest; Elevation: 1200--3100 m. Bioregional Distribution: n&c SN; Distribution Outside California: Nevada. Fruiting Time: Jul--Sep
