Juncus capitatus Weigel
Habit: Annual < 10(14) cm. Stem: thread-like, channeled, angled, or flat. Leaf: basal; blade 1.5--3.5 cm, margins +- inrolled; sheath loose, appendages 0. Inflorescence: clusters 1(5) per stem; flowers 2--6(25); lower bracts 5--15 mm, generally > inflorescence, leaf-like, +- keeled. Flower: sepals 3--4(5) mm, acuminate, petals 2--2.5(3.5) mm, ovate, thin; stamens 3. Fruit: < petals, ovoid. Seed: 0.2--0.3 mm, asymmetric. Chromosomes: 2n=18.
Ecology: Uncommon. Vernal pools, swales, damp meadows, creeks, disturbed dunes; Elevation: < 1000 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCo, NCoR, CaRF, n&c SNF, GV, CCo, SnFrB; Distribution Outside California: scattered in south-central United States; native to Eurasia, northern Africa. Fruiting Time: Apr--Jun Note: Perianth parts as few as 2 when conditions poor.
