Juncus capillaris F.J. Herm.
Habit: Annual, densely cespitose, 0.7--5.7 cm, +- red-brown in fruit; generally self-pollinating. Stem: 0.1--0.3 mm wide. Leaf: basal, < 2.2 cm; sheath appendages 0. Inflorescence: flowers 1--3 per stem; bracts 0.4--1.5 mm, acute to acuminate, membranous. Flower: perianth parts 4--6, 1.8--2.8 mm, petals > sepals; stamens 2--3, filaments > anthers, anthers < 0.7 mm. Fruit: < perianth and much lighter in color, generally +- spheric to obovoid. Seed: < 10 per fruit, < 4 per row, 0.5--0.8 mm, at least base +- obscurely striate; appendages small. Chromosomes: 2n=36.
Ecology: Moist, bare to grassy places, meadows, streambanks, granitic seeps; Elevation: 1200--3200 m. Bioregional Distribution: SNH; Distribution Outside California: southern Oregon. Fruiting Time: Jul--Sep
