Juncus breweri Engelm.
Habit: Perennial herb 10--130 cm; rhizome thick, creeping, occasionally vertical. Stem: slender, twisted or arching, firm. Leaf: basal; sheaths dark brown, shiny, loose; blades 0. Inflorescence: appearing lateral, compact; lowest bract >= stem, cylindric, resembling stem; bractlets 2 per flower; flowers generally few. Flower: perianth parts 5--8 mm, sepals generally > petals, dark, middle +- green, sides brown to +- purple, margins membranous. Fruit: < perianth, ovoid, dark brown, shiny; tip acute. Seed: 0.7--1.1 mm, ovoid, appendages 0.
Ecology: Coastal dunes and marshes; Elevation: < 100 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCo, CCo, SCo; Distribution Outside California: to British Columbia. Fruiting Time: Aug--Apr
