Iris germanica L.
Habit: Rhizome 10--20 mm diam. Stem: branched, 30--60 cm. Leaf: basal 20--35 mm wide; cauline 0--3, bract-like. Inflorescence: flowers 2--6; lowest 2 bracts alternate, spreading, inner scarious near tip. Flower: perianth generally white to blue-purple, tube 20--26 mm; sepals 7--10 cm, 40--60 mm wide, obovate, with white or light blue, generally yellow-tipped beards; petals 5--8 cm, 35--65 mm wide, obovate; ovary triangular, style branches 20--35 mm, crests 12--16 mm, stigmas rounded-triangular. Chromosomes: 2n=44.
Ecology: Roadsides, old homesteads in open or light shade; Elevation: 100--1000 m. Bioregional Distribution: n SNF, SCoRI, SW, DMoj; Distribution Outside California: eastern United States, Europe, Asia. Flowering Time: Apr--May Note: Variable especially in size, color in cultivation.
