Fruit: septicidal [loculicidal], mericarps 5, dry, generally 1-seeded, each persistent on 1 of 5 linear segments of beak that separate from central column by curving or coiling upward. NATURALIZED Habit: Annual, biennial. Stem: decumbent to ascending, 1--5 dm, 1--3 mm wide in lower 1/2, hairs +- sparse. Leaf: blade 3.5--10 cm wide; divided > 0.9 to base or midrib, segments 5, +- sessile to short-stalked, pinnately lobed to dissected, middle segment 16--37(49)-lobed in distal half. Flower: pedicel 5--20 mm; sepals 6--8 mm, smooth, soft-hairy, awned; petals (8.5)10.5--12.5(14.2) mm, (2.1)2.6--4.5(6.1) mm wide, rounded, pink to red-purple; anthers purplish. Fruit: mericarp 2.5--3.1 mm, net-like, with 1--2(3) collar-like rings and long fibers at tip, glabrous or hairy, basal callus 0; beak 17--19 mm, narrow tip 4--5 mm; stigmas +- 1 mm. Seed: smooth. Chromosomes: 2n=64. Ecology: Open to shaded sites; Elevation: < 500 m.
