Gayophytum racemosum Torr. & A. Gray
Stem: < 40 cm; branches generally proximal, not forked, 2° branches generally many. Leaf: 1--2.5 cm, not much reduced distally on stem. Inflorescence: 1st flower 1--3 nodes distal to base. Flower: petals 1.3--1.8 mm; larger stamens 0.8--1.5 mm; ovary hairy or not. Fruit: 10--15 mm, > pedicel, flat, +- grooved along midline, smooth or slightly knobby; lateral 2 valves not attached, wider. Seed: 10--35, appressed or above ascending, +- opposite, glabrous or densely puberulent. Chromosomes: 2n=28.
Ecology: Wet meadows, drying margins; Elevation: 1000--4000 m. Bioregional Distribution: CaRH, SNH, Teh, WTR, Wrn; Distribution Outside California: to Washington, Alberta, Colorado. Flowering Time: May--Oct Note: Probably from hybrids between Gayophytum decipiens, Gayophytum humile.
