Habit: Subshrub 30--60 cm, climbing to sprawling, +- gray-hairy, base, stems woody; dioecious, occ monoecious. Leaf: in whorls of 4, 6--17 mm, widely ovate to elliptic, 3-veined, tip obtuse to acute, not sharp to touch; petiole base expanded. Inflorescence: leafy clusters, axillary, drooping. Flower: corolla rotate, cream, hairy externally. Fruit: nutlets; hairs long, straight, white, red-brown to +- blue or gray. Chromosomes: 2n=22.
Ecology: N-facing slopes, canyon bottoms, mixed conifer forest, oaks or sagebrush; Elevation: 820--2350 m. Bioregional Distribution: s SNH, s SCoRI (Caliente Range), s SCoRO (Sierra Madre Range), TR. Flowering Time: May--Aug
