Erysimum cheiri (L.) Crantz
Habit: Subshrub (biennial in cultivation). Stem: 1.5--8 dm, woody at base. Leaf: 3--15 mm wide, oblanceolate to obovate, entire; hairs generally 2--3-rayed. Flower: sepals 6--10 mm, +- purple; petals 20--35 mm, 5--10 mm wide, orange, yellow, brown, red, purple, violet, or white, claw 7--12 mm. Fruit: 3--10 cm, 2--7 mm wide, cylindric or flat parallel to septum, not constricted between seeds; valves outside with 2-rayed hairs, inside glabrous, midvein prominent; style 0.5--4 mm, stigma lobes longer than wide; pedicel spreading to ascending, 7--13 mm. Seed: 32--44, 2--4 mm, ovate, flattened; wing at tip or continuous. Chromosomes: 2n=12.
Ecology: Uncommon. Disturbed areas; Elevation: < 1500 m. Bioregional Distribution: s ChI (Santa Catalina Island), e WTR; Distribution Outside California: Canada; native to southern Europe. Flowering Time: Apr--Jul
