Eragrostis curvula (Schrad.) Nees
Habit: Perennial herb. Stem: erect, densely tufted, unbranched, 4--12 dm, glabrous. Leaf: sheaths < internodes, glabrous or hairy, generally with long hairs on collar and inside upper sheath margin; ligule +- 1 mm; blade (1)2--3(5) dm, inrolled, long-tapered, distally thread-like, scabrous. Inflorescence: < 35 cm, 15 cm wide, open, generally nodding; branches flexible; lower axils long-hairy; spikelet short-stalked. Spikelet: 5--8 mm, 1.5--2 mm wide, generally gray-green; glumes acute, 1-veined, lower 1.5--2 mm, upper 2.5--3 mm; axis breaking apart tardily; lemma obtuse to +- acute, 3-veined, lemma of lowest floret 1.8--3 mm; anthers 1--1.5 mm, purple. Fruit: +- 1.5 mm, +- ovoid or oblong, light brown. Chromosomes: 2n=40,60,80.
Ecology: Roadsides; Elevation: < 700 m. Bioregional Distribution: CaRF, GV, SCoRO, SnBr, PR, DMoj; Distribution Outside California: to southern United States; native to southern Africa. Flowering Time: Aug--Oct Note: Ornamental, cultivated for erosion control.
