Crocidium multicaule Hook.
Habit: Annual 5--30 cm. Stem: 1--few from base, generally unbranched, glabrous to +- tomentose (especially lower axils). Leaf: basal and cauline, alternate, 10--25 mm, linear to obovate, +- fleshy, entire or few-toothed, cauline reduced. Inflorescence: heads 1, radiate, long-peduncled; involucre +- bell-shaped; phyllaries 5--13 in 1 series, fused at base, ovate or elliptic, thin, veiny; receptacle conic, epaleate. Ray Flower: 5--13; ray 4--10 mm, yellow. Disk Flower: 12--100+; corolla 2--3 mm, yellow; anther bases rounded, tips narrowly triangular; style branches flattened, tips triangular, minutely papillate. Fruit: 1.5--2.5 mm, elliptic, ribbed, brown, puberulent, gelatinous when wet; pappus 1--3 mm, of barbed bristles, early-deciduous (often 0 on ray fruit). Chromosomes: 2n=18.
Ecology: Sandy soils, grassland, open woodland; Elevation: generally <= 1600 m. Bioregional Distribution: KR, NCoR, CaRF, SNF, e SnFrB, SCoR (uncommon), MP; Distribution Outside California: to British Columbia, Idaho. Flowering Time: Feb--Jun
