Cyperus acuminatus Torr. & Hook.
Habit: Annual 5--40 cm. Stem: 0.4--1 mm thick. Inflorescence: inflorescence bracts 3--6; rays 0--5, < 20 mm; head 5--18 mm wide, +- spheric; spikelets 4--7 mm, flat, ovate; flower bracts 1.3--2 mm, lance-ovate, 3-veined, some or all tips distinctly outcurved, narrow-acute. Flower: stigmas 3. Fruit: 0.7--1.1 mm, obovoid-ellipsoid, widest near middle, stalked, smooth, light brown, tip acute, beaked.
Ecology: Edges of temporary pools, ponds, streams; Elevation: < 400 m. Bioregional Distribution: KR, GV, WTR; Distribution Outside California: to Washington, northern central and eastern United States, southern Canada, northeastern Mexico. Flowering Time: Jun--Oct
