Cuscuta campestris Yunck.
Inflorescence: head- to raceme-like, flowers 6--25(30); pedicels 0.3--2.5(3.5) mm. Flower: (1.9)2.1--3.6 mm, membranous, not papillate, parts generally in 5s; calyx generally +- = corolla tube, cup-shaped, divided 2/5--3/5, lobes ovate-triangular, veined, shiny, bases overlapped, margins entire, tips obtuse to rounded; corolla tube (1.1)1.5--1.9 mm, bell-shaped, scales >= corolla tube, oblong-ovate to spoon-shaped, rounded, uniformly densely fringed, lobes spreading, triangular-lanceolate, +- = tube, margins entire, tips acute to acuminate, incurved; filaments 0.4--0.7 mm, anthers exserted, (0.3)0.4--0.5 mm, widely elliptic; styles 0.8--1.6 mm, generally = ovary. Fruit: 1.3--2.8 mm, 1.9--3.8 mm wide, spheric-depressed to depressed, not thickened or raised around opening between styles, translucent or not, corolla enveloping 1/3 or less of fruit. Seed: 4, 1.1--1.5 mm, 0.9--1.1 mm wide, +- spheric to widely elliptic. Chromosomes: 2n=56.
Ecology: Generally on herbs, many crops, roadsides, fields; Elevation: < 500 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCo, NCoRI, SNF, GV, CCo, SCo; Distribution Outside California: worldwide. Flowering Time: May--Nov Note: Treated as synonym of Cuscuta pentagona Engelm. in TJM (1993), but more recent work has shown that Cuscuta campestris and Cuscuta pentagona are distinct species, and that the latter does not occur in California.
Unabridged Synonyms: Cuscuta pentagona var. calycina Engelm.
