Cryptantha watsonii (A. Gray) Greene
Habit: Annual 10--35 cm, slender. Stem: branches 0--few, throughout; thin-strigose and spreading-short-rough-hairy. Leaf: 0.5--4 cm, linear to oblanceolate, short-bulbous-based-bristly abaxially, densely, occasionally roughly strigose adaxially. Inflorescence: in (1s) 2s, generally dense, open in fruit; bracts generally 0, occasionally 1--few near base; pedicel not elongated in fruit, < 0.5 mm, +- ascending. Flower: calyx 1.5--2 mm, 2.5--3.5 mm in fruit, deciduous, lobes lanceolate, dense-strigose, midvein +- not thickened with few, coarse, spreading bristles; corolla deciduous, limb 0.5--1.5 mm diam, appendages minute, pale yellow to white. Fruit: nutlets (3)4, 1.4--2 mm, +- lanceolate, +- compressed, gray or mottled, smooth (sparse-papillate), shiny, margin a +- flat narrow rim especially near tip to sharp-angled, base rounded, tip +- elongate; abaxially +- flat, ridge 0; adaxially biconvex, attachment scar edges not raised, +- abutted, short-forked at base; axis generally to nutlet tips.
Ecology: Rocky, gravelly soils, sagebrush scrub, pinyon/juniper woodland, occasionally conifer forest; Elevation: 1250--3100(3300) m. Bioregional Distribution: SNH (e slope), GB; Distribution Outside California: to Washington, Montana, Colorado. Flowering Time: May--Aug
