Cryptantha sparsiflora (Greene) Greene
Habit: Annual 10--30 cm, slender. Stem: 1, branches few; sparse-strigose. Leaf: lower occasionally opposite; 1--3 cm, narrow-oblong to -oblanceolate, strigose. Inflorescence: in 1s or 2s, few-flowered, dense; bracts 0, occasionally 1--2 near base; pedicel not elongated in fruit, < 0.5 mm, spreading to ascending. Flower: calyx 1.5--2 mm, 2--3 mm in fruit, deciduous, lobes ovate to oblong, margins sparse-ciliate, midvein +- thickened, with short, ascending curved, +- hook-tipped bristles; corolla limb 0.5--1(1.5) mm diam, appendages minute, +- white. Fruit: nutlet 1, +- 2 mm, ovate, +- smooth, +- shiny, margin sharp-angled, base +- truncate, tip +- beaked; abaxially low-rounded, ridge 0; adaxially +- flat, attachment scar edges abutted, wide-forked at base; axis not to nutlet tip.
Ecology: Open, dry, rocky sites, sparse grassland, chaparral, foothill woodland; Elevation: 300--1300 m. Bioregional Distribution: c&s SNF, Teh, e SnFrB, SCoR. Flowering Time: Apr--May
