Cryptantha schoolcraftii Tiehm
Habit: Biennial (perennial herb) 6--25 cm, cespitose; caudex not woody, unbranched. Stem: 1--many, central generally > lateral; +- gray, tomentose and spreading-bristly. Leaf: basal rosettes generally 1; 1.5--4 cm, +- spoon-shaped, thick, +- gray, dense-tomentose and appressed-bristly, abaxial bristles bulbous-based. Inflorescence: dense, head-like to +- cylindric; pedicel not elongated in fruit, 0--1 mm. Flower: calyx 2--4 mm, 5--7 mm in fruit, dense-bristly; corolla deciduous, limb 3--6 mm diam, appendages yellow. Fruit: nutlets generally 2--4, 2.2--3.2 mm, lanceolate to ovate, +- gray, +- shiny, margin a +- flat narrow rim; abaxially smooth to +- roughened, ridge rounded; adaxially smooth to +- tubercled, attachment scar edges abutted or occasionally +- gapped at base, edges not raised.
Ecology: Barren ash deposits, sagebrush scrub; Elevation: 1700--1750 m. Bioregional Distribution: e MP (Coppersmith Hills, Lassen Co.); Distribution Outside California: to southeastern Oregon, northwestern Nevada. Flowering Time: Jun--Jul
